Swing dance to benefit Myanmar relief

August 14, 2008 6:00 AM

Chris Humphrey and his big band played at Atlantic Hall this winter as a benefit for the Nothing but Nets campaign, and now they’ll be back Aug. 22 to raise money for cyclone victims in Myanmar.
KENNEBUNKPORT — Join Chris Humphrey and his 15-piece band as he presents a concert of new and traditional swing and Big Band music to not only entertain the family but to benefit the continued cyclone relief efforts so desperately needed to help the many cyclone victims in Myanmar.

The concert runs 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug 22, at Atlantic Hall, above the Cape Porpoise Library. Admission is a suggested $10 donation.

Humphrey of Kennebunk is a musician who is multi-faceted in his talents and accomplishments. A jazz vocalist, whose primary focus is the use of the voice as an instrument, Humphrey is an improviser and composer as well as an interpreter of song. He is a veteran jazz singer, having worked with Denon recording artists, The Ritz, and the vocal jazz quintet, Vocalease.

Chris teaches jazz piano at the University of Southern Maine. Additionally, Humphrey is the Director of Music at Cheverus High School in Portland. Previously Chris has been the Director of vocal jazz at the University of Southern Maine, and the University of New Hampshire. He is often a guest conductor and clinician, having led district and All-State jazz festivals in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.

Humphrey's new release "Nothing but Blue Sky" recently released on Cadence Jazz Records is quickly garnering praise and notoriety in the national market. Humphrey's exploration and experimentation with complex harmony, rhythm and technically diverse vocal presentation is clearly exhibited.
